Kameleon Software Support & OctiPus Transition | DJM
Kameleon support and the transition to OctiPus
Kameleon is DJM's previous-generation print-control software. Existing Kameleon installations remain supported by DJM, but Kameleon is no longer supplied for new systems.
For new print-control projects, DJM offers OctiPus, the successor to Kameleon. Customers with an existing Kameleon installation can contact DJM for support, while new projects are developed using the current OctiPus platform.
“When the introduction of HP’s full-color print modules was announced in 2010, we had to consider whether the InkMailer controller software used at the time was suitable for this. InkMailer was already used by many customers worldwide with the IPAS425i inkjet print modules.”
Adjust or redevelop?
“To support full-color printing, a 64-bit application was required. This led to the dilemma of adjusting InkMailer from 32 to 64 bits or starting a complete redevelopment.

Since DJM also wanted to introduce other inkjet printing technologies in the future, adapting the existing program code did not seem appropriate.
After my research, a completely new platform proved to be the recommended choice, particularly when considering our plans for the future. A new development platform was selected, and the software architecture was redesigned.”
It must be as simple as my iPhone!
“Dick van der Maal, founder and CEO of DJM, asked me to give a presentation about my ideas for the new developments. After 30 seconds, Dick said, ‘Stefan, go ahead.’ As I walked out of his office, he added, ‘…but it must be as simple as my iPhone.’
This was the start of the current Kameleon software platform.” And so Stefan became the godfather of Kameleon.
Modular construction is very important
“During the development of Kameleon, two aspects were particularly important: the modular structure of the software and its user-friendliness.
User-friendliness was achieved by using icons, similar to the iPhone, wherever possible instead of text, and by displaying only relevant information in the graphical user interface. This makes Kameleon easy to use, including for our international customers.

The modular architecture of Kameleon has proven itself. The software has been expanded several times with new functionality for specific applications and new printhead technologies.
In addition, multiple integrations with existing systems went very smoothly because machine-specific communication modules could be developed quickly.”
User-friendliness supports fast implementation
“An additional advantage of Kameleon’s icon-based structure is that it is highly intuitive. Operators quickly become familiar with Kameleon, which means the implementation process at our customers is very efficient.
During the first major project in which we implemented several inkjet printing systems controlled by Kameleon, the operators were already printing with the software before the training had taken place. Our customer’s feedback was that the system was very easy to operate and that they were not accustomed to such simplicity.
Naturally, the Kameleon software continues to be developed as new print modules are introduced, special features are added, and customer requests arise.
Thanks to Kameleon’s modular design, we can implement improvements and adjustments within a short period of time. In short, DJM does not stand still.”
